THURSDAY WINE TASTING
5:00pm until 7:00pm
In 1879, Finnish explorer and adventurer Gustave Niebaum searched the Napa Valley with the goal of establishing a wine estate to rival the finest chateau of France. For decades his wines won acclaim and remain some of the most admired in American wine history's classic period. By the mid-1960s, his property was divided, and estate-wine production ceased. A decade later, Francis Ford Coppola purchased 1,500 acres of this historic property and revived Captain Niebaum's fine winemaking tradition. In 1995, Niebaum-Coppola acquired the remainder of the property and restored the Inglenook Estate to its original dimensions.
2005 FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, DIRECTOR’S CUT CHARDONNAY
We crush our Chardonnay whole-cluster and then ferment entirely in French oak barrels to achieve a silky, seductive texture. Profuse aromatics of honeysuckle, orange blossoms, and ripe pear are folded into classic Russian River flavors of green apple, tropical fruit, and citrus. 12 months in 50% new French oak, 50% 1-2 year old oak; 100% Chardonnay; 14.2% alcohol. Winemaker’s notes
2005 FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA, DIRECTOR’S CUT ZINFANDEL
To ensure that we get the maximum amount of color and flavor from our Zinfandel grapes, we use a variety of techniques, which include fermentation in open-top fermenters for eight days with several punch downs a day. We also blend in small amounts of Petite Sirah for added structure. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, which adds nuances of vanilla as well as a wonderful toasted spice character. Intense aromas of cherry, black currant and rum raisin are followed by deep, rich flavors of sweet strawberry jam and briary blackberries. 14 months in French oak: 50% new, 50%. 1-2 years old; Blend: 91% Zinfandel, 9% Petite Sirah; 14.56% alcohol. Winemaker’s Notes
“Where have I seen the name Blass?” The answer is, Beringer Blass Wine Estates, formed in a 2000 merger between Beringer of Napa Valley and Wolf Blass of Australia. German-born Wolfgang Blass founded his winery in Australia’s Barossa Valley in 1966. A short time later, in 1974, he won the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show, which is awarded to the best one-year-old Australian red wine. Blass won the Trophy again in 1975, 1976 and, most recently, in 1999. This is the most prestigious wine award given in Australia. Typically, more than 700 wines, all barrel samples, compete for this honor.
2004 WOLF BLASS GOLD LABEL, CHARDONNAY
The fruit from each vineyard was separately fermented with a combination of wild and cultured yeasts in new French oak. A portion of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and lees stirring to add richness, complexity and mouthfeel to the wine. The individual vineyard parcels were then matured in French oak prior to final blending. The wine remained unfiltered until bottling, and was then bottled under screw cap to ensure freshness and preserve the characters of the wine. Winemaker notes
2002 WOLF BLASS GOLD LABEL CABERNET SAUVIGNON, COONAWARRA
90 points, Wine Enthusiast
Even tasted blind, this excellent Cab's smooth, velvety-clay feel says "Coonawarra." It's a restrained, balanced wine with pencil eraser and red plum fruit flavors, and cherry brightening the finish; even still, it's the texture you'll remember. — D.T. (12/31/2004)
