THURSDAY WINE TASTING
5:00pm until 7:00pm
2004 DOMAINE EHRHART, GEWURZTRAMINER, ALSACE, FRANCE
The Ehrhart family has been making wine in this region since 1725. Two generations ago Philippe’s grandfather Eugène began employing organic farming methods, which he believed would help him produce better wines. Philippe and Corinne continue to farm their vineyards with the same strong commitment, and today all of the wines of the domaine are certified organic by the French government. Herrenweg, a combination of gravel mixed with sand, has excellent drainage and a warm micro-climate allowing maximum ripeness while always maintaining finesse and the balance of soil and fruit. The Gewurztraminer Herrenweg is rich with floral aromas, spice notes, and ripe exotic fruit flavors.
2005 CHATEAU GAUBERT, GRAVES, BORDEAUX, FRANCE
The winemaker and owner of this terrific estate is the young Dominique Haverlan. He is the president of the Growers Association in the Graves region of Bordeaux. The estate is an historic site dating back to the eighteenth century. This is the top wine of the property and is sourced from the best vineyard parcels of the château. The estate and its vineyards are located in the small village of Portets, not far from the banks of the Garonne River. The soil here is composed of riverbed gravel typical to the region. All the wines made here are farmed using sustainable agriculture at low yields and very selective harvesting. • 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Semillon • Fermentation in barrel (35% new) and aged on the lees for nine months with regular batonnage that adds texture and richness on the palate. • This wine can be enjoyed young or up to 5 years bottle age for more complex flavors.
2006 DOMAINE DE LA PETITE CASSAGNE, RHôNE, FRANCE
88 Points Wine Enthusiast, Best Buy
With its scents of melon rind and wet stones, this is clearly no tutti-frutti rosé. There's a hint of cherry, but the emphasis is on lip smacking minerality from the start all the way through the long, mouthwatering finish. — J.C. (7/1/2007)
2006 DOMAINE ANDRÉ BRUNEL, CôTES DU RHôNE, FRANCE
André Brunel, the renowned producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape of Les Cailloux, also owns this small Côtes du Rhône vineyard located just outside of Châteauneuf-du-Pape near the village of Orange. The 9 hectare parcel is in one contiguous piece, is very flat and very exposed to the sun. The vines were planted in 1978. This wine is a blend of 90% Grenache, with 5% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. André de-stems 90% of the grapes to ensure the purity and roundness of the Grenache fruit. This wine is entirely made in stainless steel tank and no more than 1300 cases are produced, often less. Cuvée Sommelongue is bottled unfiltered and fashioned in a supple and open style with a powerful core of fruit, earth and spice; this is an extremely textured wine. Cuvée Sommelongue is always considered one of the best and most sought after Côtes du Rhônes made.
2005 CHATEAU DE VALCOMBE, SYRAH-GRENACH, RHôNE, FRANCE
Located on a rocky plateau at the western edge of the Rhône River, the estate of Valcombe is owned and managed by Dominique and Bénédicte Ricome. The first vines were planted here in 1750, and today the property totals nearly 70 hectares. After five generations in the same family, the Ricomes are producing very fine wine. Everything here is done by hand and our selection is severe. The Tradition cuvée (Appellation Costières de Nîmes Contrôlée) is made from a fine selection of old-vines Syrah and 30% Grenache. We ferment and age this wine in stainless steel tank to retain the fresh qualities of the fruit and bottle it unfiltered.
