2006 Le Rote, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Italy
Today, the Scotti family produces a tiny amount (around 2,500 cases total) of exceptionally good wine. Vernaccia is one of Italy’s most historic whites (the first to be elevated to DOC), and San Gimignano’s mainstay, so half of all production is devoted to this classic. The other focus, importantly, is Sangiovese. Because of the high global demand for Vernaccia, very few producers in the area still devote any land at all to red varietals. White wine has a straw yellow color with golden reflex and a good extraction. At the nose this Vernaccia is rich, intense and somewhat persistent. It'is flowery, fruity and slightly vegetal. At the palate the wine is clean and mineral. It has an high alcohol content (13%) and a noticeable acidity. Flavours remind of white and yellow flowers, figs, peaches jam and apricots. The finish is intense and persistent with intense notes of bread crust and bitter almonds. Perfect for warm weather, flaky fish and crisp salads.
2006 J. Moreau & Fils Vouvray, France
The Loire Valley, which shares the northern boundary of French wine production with Champagne, is famous for its mild climate and beautiful Renaissance castles. Varietal: 100 % Chenin BlancVisual Visual Aspect: Golden color. Nose: Aromas with hints of apple and orange blossom. Palate: Well-rounded with pear and honey suckle flavors. Food Pairing: Serve well chilled as an aperitif, with spicy dishes, or with sweet-savoury combinations.
2004 Marques de Grinon Caliza, Spain
Deep purple color with glistening cherry hues. Enticingly fruity and powerful aromas reminiscent of lush raspberries and ripe black cherries, delicately balanced by a subtle minerality and notes of wild peppermint. It is a beautifully full-bodied and fresh wine that reveals a silky structure leading to a textured and long lasting finish. 65% Syrah, 35% Graciano.
2004 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, Australia
Color: Radiant, deep, dark red. Nose: There is no second guessing the variety here - pure Cabernet fruit aromas abound. Notes of beetroot, capsicum and blackcurrant leap from the glass, and with air, sarsaparilla. Oak is barely perceptible, yet sits confidently in the background. Palate: Firm, complex and ripe, Cabernet fruits are framed and complexed by notes of soy and freshly tanned leather. The 2005 Bin 407 is a balanced wine with a substantial mid-palate - impressively so for a 100% Cabernet offering. Interwoven French and American oak artefacts of vanillin, cedar and lemon complete the offering. Food pairings: Ideal with hearty meat dishes.
