FRIDAY WINE TASTING
June 27, 2008 -5:00pm until 7:00pm
In the spring of 1990, Daniel Gehrs Wines was founded. He began with a Loire-style theme featuring old favorites like Chenin Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Cabernet Franc, and currently makes Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and small quantities of other enticing varietals and blends. In January of 1993, Dan made a momentous change and accepted the position of winemaker at Santa Barbara County's Zaca Mesa Winery with the understanding that he could bring the Daniel Gehrs brand with him and continue producing it on a limited scale. His first vintage at Zaca Mesa produced a Syrah that soared to Wine Spectator's #6 of the top 100 wines of the year for 1995. The influence of that one wine can still be seen and felt now in the growing popularity of Syrah and Rhone-style wines being produced on the Central Coast today. With a production of close to 7,500 cases a year and a commitment to small lots of high quality wines, this is a wonderful winery to follow.
2005 DANIEL GEHRS CHENIN BLANC, MONTEREY
Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast
We have been making Chenin Blanc from this exceptional vineyard near the Pinnacles/Chalone appellation since 1991. This is a dry white wine, cold-fermented and aged in stainless steel instead of oak. This production method suggests honey, flower and pear aromas with green apple and quince flavors. This wine proves the worth of this often under-appreciated varietal. Suggested Pairings – Bring on the goat cheese! The acid in this wine stands up to high-acid cheeses or salad dressings, but also acts as a nice counterpoint to roast chicken. Lean fish (i.e., not salmon, tuna, et al) with lemon.
2005 DANIEL GEHRS UNOAKED CHARDONNAY, SANTA BARBARA
Sometimes not at all is better than too much of a good thing. This is an unfettered "au naturel" style of Chardonnay presented with the full complement of original, primary tropical fruit for which Santa Barbara County is justly famous. Oak is simply unnecessary. The handpicked grapes were gently crushed and pressed, the juice settled, racked and cold fermented at a slow rate to preserve the natural essences of the grape. This complex, fruit-driven wine comes equipped with lemon blossom, quince, yellow apple, pineapple and guava aromas and flavors as standard features. A bit of aging will add dimensions of roasted hazelnuts and lightly toasted bread together with balanced acidity.
2005 DANIEL GEHRS CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SANTA BARBARA
This Cabernet sauvignon is dark, inky garnet color with excellent clarity. The nose offers medium intensity smoke, brambles and cassis aromas leading into light coffee and spice. All this is accented by aromatic, floral and oak notes. The palate is more reserved with more brambly berries than cassis and floral to leathery notes and spice. Soft and slight tannins, proportioned acids and nicely held back alcohol make for a smooth mouthfeel. A medium length finish is replete with bramble and currant.
2005 DANIEL GEHRS SYRAH, PASO ROBLES
The cassis, blackberry and cola fruit signatures are melded harmoniously with toast and vanilla notes coming from the American oak. The central softness of the vintage is framed with a combination of mature fruit tannins and solid oak tannins making this wine a fine companion at the table with traditional meat entrees including lamb, beef, and wild game. Gold Medal, "Top Syrah", 2007 World Wine Challenge Competition. Silver Medal, Orange County Fair.
