WEDNESDAY WINE TASTING
July 2, 2008 -5:00pm until 7:00pm
2005 KENWOOD RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC, SONOMA
There’s just enough of a touch of green gooseberry and lemongrass to give this wine a piquant bite, both aromatically and in the mouth. Then, it turns rich in figgy pineapple and honeysuckle flavors, with crisp, stimulating acids. But that peppery bite returns refreshingly on the finish. Great with Havarti, aged Gouda and Edam cheeses.
2005 ST. FRANCIS CHARDONNAY, SONOMA
Rich with notes of citrus, melon and vanilla, this Chardonnay is a fresh expression of the hand-picked classic varietal. A third of the grapes in this blend were grown in our own vineyards; the rest we carefully selected from nearby vineyards in Sonoma Valley, Carneros, and Russian River appellations, choosing only fully ripened fruit. The fruit is 100% whole-cluster pressed and fermented in different lots. Six different yeasts and ML strains were used to enhance the rich mouthfeel. Barrel aged for six months in French and American oak barrels before blending. Barrels are lees stirred by hand during aging to achieve a rich, lush mouth-feel. This Chardonnay undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation. As you will taste, the barrel component adds a toasty complexity. Fruit and pear aromas are offset on the palate by hints of oak and vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, this Chardonnay has ripe fruit flavors, crisp high acid in the mouth, and a rich lingering finish.
2006 MORGAN HIGHLANDS CHARDONNAY, SANTA LUCIA
Wine Enthusiast 91 Points
Those familiar with Morgan’s more expensive Chardonnays, such as the Double L (which comprises 55% of this blend) will find some true value in this regional wine. It shows similar power and authority in a showy Chablis-style wine whose acidic, minerally structure frames intense citrus and oak flavors. Include pineapple, lemongrass, butterscotch, nuttiness, lime, a hint of green tea, pear, walnut, and minerals. This wine shows richness and intensity, and the splendid integration of fruit flavors, oak, minerality and acidity that is a hallmark of well-made Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnays.
2005 FESS PARKER PINOT NOIR, SANTA BARBARA
Captivating scents of black cherry, black raspberry and cedar mingle with a touch of toast, vanilla forest floor and cola. Cloves and cinnamon spice round out the wine’s beautiful aromas. On the palate the flavors of cranberry, chocolate, raspberry ripe cherries and spice combine elegantly with its gentle acidity. The perfect wine for duck or lamb seasoned with Mediterranean spices.
2004 SWANSON OAKVILLE MERLOT, NAPA
2004 Swanson Merlot is a powerful, concentrated expression of the variety. The nose shows black cherry, smoke, blackberry, and espresso. The flavors in the mouth echo the aromatic expression nicely. The fine-grained tannins for which our Merlots have become known provide the round, ripe texture of this wine. While drinking surprisingly well today, this wine will improve and be enjoyable for at least the next 6-8 years. Close your eyes and you may find yourself on the Right Bank in Bordeaux.
