THURSDAY WINE TASTING
August 28, 2008 -5:00pm until 7:00pm
2004 TRIMBACH RESERVE PINOT GRIS, ALSACE, FRANCE
100% Pinot Gris, with grapes sourced from the Trimbach’s own vineyards and about 100 growers with whom the family has long-term relationships. Not to be confused with Italy’s Pinot Grigio, the Pinot Gris vine of Alsace is descended from the Pinot Beurot, originally from Burgundy. Abundant ripe fruit on the nose and a creaminess on the palate are brought to life with subtle acidity. Softer and less challenging than other varieties, this wine is still totally dry. A good choice for appetizers, fish and shellfish, poultry and other white meats and many lighter pasta, rice and Asian dishes.
2006 STERLING VINTNERS CHARDONNAY, CENTRAL COAST, CALIFORNIA
The color has soft yellow overtones from its barrel ageing. Very balanced with aromas of pineapple, green apples, and floral notes, balanced by caramel, vanilla, and toast. On the palate are nice flavors of green apple, melon, fig, vanilla, and spices. The wine has balanced acidity and mouth filling creaminess. It is a delightful complement to flavorful seafood, chicken, and pork.
2005 PIERRE MATROT MEURSAULT, BURGUNDY, FRANCE
Solid gold core with a bright, clear rim. Cool wet minerality drips off aromas of candied white grapefruit, peach and lemon, surrounded by a lighter floral lift. There is also a subtle hint of sweet almond creeping in around the fruit. Ripe peach and pear accented by lemon and lime citrus notes fill the palate. A solid core of minerality supports the body leading to a crisp, bright finish with lingering citrus and almond notes.
2004 BEAULIEU VINEYARD COASTAL MERLOT, CALIFORNIA COAST
Dark ruby color. Fully ripe plummy aromas with hints of dark chocolate, subtle herbs and black cherry herald similarly intense fruit flavors. Medium-full bodied, with a velvety texture and ripe, lush fruit balanced by subtle acidity and mild tannins. This Coastal Merlot is juicy and deep. Food ideas: Try with richer pasta dishes, pizza, grilled chicken and hard cheeses like Dry Jack.
2003 SAGELANDS CABERNET SAUVIGNON, COLUMBIA VALLEY, WASHINGTON
The 2003 Sagelands Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is made with grapes grown in the "Four Corners" of the Columbia Valley appellation in eastern Washington. Wine critics have called Washington's 2003 vintage one of the best in recent history. The wine reveals an intense nose of Bing cherry aroma, and a delicate touch of sweet vanilla and caramel. On the palate, bright cherry flavors, round tannins and a touch of cocoa powder on the lingering finish.
2003 CHATEAU GREYSAC MEDOC, BORDEAUX, FRANCE
88 Points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
"A sleeper of the vintage, the gorgeously plump 2003 Greysac may be even better than my score indicates. It reveals hints of sweet cherries, figs, plums, and smoky licorice along with supple tannin, a beautiful texture, medium body, and no hard edges. This luscious, tasty Medoc should drink well for 6-8years."
